Anders Petersen exhibit at Marvelli Gallery

I first discovered the work of the great Swedish photographer Anders Petersen in 2007, when some of his work was exhibited at London's Photographers' Gallery when he was shortlisted for the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize 2007. Although he was already famous for his 1978 book Cafe Lehmitz, which influenced many photographers including Nan Goldin, his name was not one I had known. On seeing the London exhibit, I breathed in the intense poetry of his vision and was affected in a manner that I rarely experience.

When his book "French Kiss" was released, I rushed to get a copy. An extension of the work I had seen in London, these pictures taken in France are transcendent in their honesty, intimacy, and raw beauty. His work on the surface is a record of his travels and experiences; on a deeper level of how the people he meets affects his life and visa versa. The hypnotic images he creates are ultimately a gift for us, the viewer. The book is full bleed and a full breath in the artist's attention to tonality and layout. As distinct an experience as an exhibition of his work on the gallery wall.

On view now, In New York City, at the Marvelli Gallery are some of these recent French images, displayed as magnificent large digital pigment print, stretched out across the gallery in a three tier grid. Yes photography, but these charcoal-like renderings are pure poetry as well! Through December 30th you must not walk but run and saturate your senses in the work of Anders Petersen.

Permanent Print Collection @ Center for Photography at Woodstock

My photograph BLASS & CO. was recently acquired by the Center for Photography at Woodstock's Permanent Print Collection at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, SUNY New Paltz. An exhibition titled "Recent Additions to the Permanent Print Collection"
took place in Woodstock from March thru May of this year.

The curator Maggie Smith wrote in her exhibition statement:
Miles Ladin (NYC) specializes in creating portraits of the rich and famous at high profile events and parties. While his photographs are mostly candid, his subjects have a strong familiarity with the camera. As celebrities, they are acutely aware and controlling of their self-image, creating a tension between the unguarded moment and their predilection to control their public image. The heightened sense of voyeurism in Ladin’s photographs takes the issue of looking at others and turns it into a social commentary about celebrity and our obsession with it. In Blass & Co., the camera angles distort the subjects and create an atmosphere of instability; combined with the high contrasts of the image, his subjects seem almost unnatural and grotesque. Ladin is also commenting on the public and its obsessive need to scrutinize and involve themselves in the lives of celebrities - we are drawn to his images because the subjects are familiar and we are hungry to know more (gossip).

New York City-based Miles Ladin photographs the annual fashion shows at Bryant Park and the after parties attended by the “rich and famous.” To the men and women attending these exclusive functions, being photographed is an event which ultimately leads to an appearance in a prestigious magazine, an occurrence far more significant than the party itself. Published celebrity images in general become a symbol of status for the subject and a contemporary means for idol worship to the audience. Ladin subverts this ritual and through his images invites us to contemplate the humorous foibles of those he photographs. Amidst the jostling of photographers and posturing of guests (and vice-versa), Ladin’s images explore the idea of self-declared marginalization from mainstream society due to fame, money, or ego. Ladin examines mediocre clichés about beauty, success or even how to feel about one's own life, which is a stark contrast to the typical paparazzi images usually published. By holding up a mirror to those who see themselves as “fabulous”, the photographer offers us his subjective critique on the consequences of fame and beauty.

This summer The Wolfsonian museum in South Beach, Florida is home to a retrospective look at swimwear design and an accompanying installation on bathing culture. Beauty on the Beach: A Centennial Celebration of Swimwear explores the role that fashion design plays in shaping and reflecting popular conceptions of glamour and health through an examination of innovations in swimwear design and creative marketing strategies. The exhibition features archival materials from the Jantzen swimwear company — celebrating its one-hundredth anniversary in 2009 — and The Wolfsonian's collection. The installation Sun Stroke Stimulus is a contemporary portrait of Miami Beach's "bathing" culture by photographer Miles Ladin. Both are on view July 10-October 11, 2009.

Barkley Hendricks retrospective @ Studio Museum

My friend and former professor at Connecticut College, the painter Barkley Hendricks,
will have his work exhibited in his first career retrospective, Birth of the Cool, at The Studio Museum in Harlem.
This is a much welcomed acolade for this under appreciated artist.
On view are his iconic portraits, meditative landscapes, and a caucophony of other works
that comment on the cultural and sexuall mores of our times.
The work and exhibit are a must see and clearly show the prescident
for such current "art stars" as Kehinde Wiley and Rene Cox.

Yes, as my good friend Kelli Fidlow commented they look like sketches, but some of these are indeed gems. Like all of R.B. Kitaj's work, they are full of intellectual rigor and visual challenge. These "Little Pictures" were done before his unexpected death in October (rumors of suicide were fluttering around the show's opening). The understated subject of this show is color. These final small pictures painted on burlap-like canvas celebrate color and as fragments move away from the wonderfully oblique narratives usually found in Kitaj's pictures.
The images contain references to Rothko, Pissaro, Matisse, as well as portrait's of Freud, Proust, and the artist's father. Self-Portraits filled with kaleidoscopic color as well as love poems to his beloved deceased wife Sandra are also exorcised from the artist’s psyche in this final showing.

San Art is pleased to announce our second exhibition entitled, “City Panoramic”. “City Panoramic” is an international photography exhibition curated by Tiffany Chung, features artists Miles Ladin (USA), Takashi Arai (Japan), Scean Mitchell aka Soundproofgreay (USA/Japan), Junko Ito (Japan), Bui The Trung Nam (Viet Nam) and Stephanus Kim (USA). “City Panoramic” is an attempt to re-imagine the urban landscape and to understand our experience of the city through photography.

While some of the works examine whether the city architecture fits within the natural landscape or is an intrusion to it, others attempt to re-define nature within the urban context. These works also reflect the urban experience of city inhabitants through their repetitive mapping, speed and impulse. Moreover, the artists were asked to digitally ship their photographs to Viet Nam. This is an important aspect of the show’s concept in which our references of the urban space are expanded to the invisible boundaries of digital networks and wireless technologies, not only its physical landmarks and borders. In this regard, “City Panoramic” isn’t just a document on the tangible manifestations of the never-ending process of urbanization but rather explores its underlying meaning and structure by investigating the social and cultural impacts.

For over fifteen years, I have made photographs that explore the everyday from a critical standpoint. It is my hope that by holding a mirror up to reality, I can reflect the deeper truths and in my own small way spark greater social awareness.

In June of 2007 I visited Istanbul, Turkey. While exploring the city on foot, I noticed several very small buildings labeled with a skull and crossbones. I discovered that these structures are the transformer stations that distribute the city’s electricity. Called trafolar, these containers are found in parks, on the streets, and along the highways of Istanbul. Usually unadorned, these utility stations are an eyesore on the otherwise exotic and quaint streets of Constantinople, both the European and Asian sides. Due to a recent beautification edict implemented by the Istanbul Municipality, these containers have been decorated with painted murals. Often executed in a trompe l’oeil style, the motifs rendered include the sea, flowers, forests, classical architecture, and boats. The paradise portrayed is in stark contrast to the toxicity of what is held within as well as the surrounding urban environment.

In 2001, I photographed the service entrances of some of New York City’s most elite residential apartment buildings. The maids, movers, deliverymen, and other workers who service these residences use these entrances. Focusing primarily on buildings located in the city’s Upper East Side, I limited the scope to include two of the wealthiest postal codes in the country, 10021 & 10022. My initial interest in the service entrances was due to my childhood memories of playing in and often trespassing through the service entrances surrounding my family’s apartment on Beekman Place, in New York City.

As I started to photograph these entrances and spaces, I became interested in both the formal and associative qualities of the architecture. Visually the spaces include doorways, fencing, barbed wire, signage, and security devices. Psychologically the entrances triggered in my mind the sense of the forbidden, the other (i.e. blue collar), and the hidden. Intellectually I was interested by the semiotics built into the architecture (consciously or not) of these spaces that are particular to New York City. The architecture subjugates class distinctions in a variety of ways including through the design, industrial materials, and lighting. Although these entrances do indeed have a utilitarian purpose they sharply contrast the esthetics found both in the lobbies and the canopied doorways from which that the tenants enter and exit.

These entrances, like the maids and workmen who use them, are kept hidden, downtrodden and at a distance, thereby not intruding on the idyll of affluence. These are entrances that most people (including the buildings' residences) don't really notice, much like the individuals that use them. They are invisible yet they are intrinsic to the structure.

CAMERA READY: Photojournalist Miles Ladin will have his first New York solo exhibition titled "TIPS (from a native New Yorker)" at Kevin Heaphy Fitness Studio May 10 through June 15, with an opening reception on May 12. The exhibit will feature numerous large-scale prints of images from 1995 through the present. A selection of color images illustrating New York street scenes taken from Ladin's 2001 limited edition artists' book titled "Lunch Poems" will hang alongside his signature black-and-white celebrity party shots and photos from other city settings, such as fashion shows and nightclubs. Ladin previously contributed regularly to publications such as The New York Times and W magazine and currently contributes to WWD The Magazine covering New York Fashion Week, as well as nightlife photography for the Village Voice. "The running theme of the show is edgy insider's view of New York City with a sardonic take," he said.

Among some really incredible paintings look for "The Black Dress, 1960"
a picture that contains a portrait of poet James Schuyler along with six of Ada. Schuyler who was the subject of my artist's book "That Various Field" was a friend of Katz. Part of the same 1950's New York artistic circle, Katz was also friendly with the painter Fairfield Porter who's painting shares a similar sensibility in regards to subject matter and compisition despite strong formal differences. Schuyler who lived with Fairfield Porter and his family for 12 years, was close to Katz' son Vincent who grew up to be a poet in his own right, recently publishing a translation of the roman poet Sextus Propertius to great aclaim (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Elegies-Propertius-Lockert-Translation/dp/0691115826/sr=8-26/qid=1168811034/ref=sr_1_26/105-4639864-4222030?ie=UTF8&s=books)
